NPP will not participate in Buem and Akatsi South by-elections

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has indicated it will not contest the Buem and Akatsi South by-elections which will be held in February in the Volta Region.

The party's resolve stems from claims that the 2012 elections were unfairly conducted and consequently the Buem and Akatsi South constituencies are not left out of the election malpractice during the December 7 polls.

The Buem seat has been vacant since last year due to the demise of the Member of Parliament-elect, Henry Ford Kamel, while the Akatsi South seat was also left vacant following the election of Member of Parliament Edward Doe Adjaho as Speaker of Parliament.

Speaking to Citi FM, General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, alluded to the NPP’s Presidential Election Petition at the Supreme Court.

He explained that “having submitted a petition to the Supreme Court for the malpractices that characterized the election, it will be inconsistent on our part to participate in the process whiles the matter is in the Supreme Court.”

He raised doubts about the outcome of the elections, saying “You cannot approbate and reprobate at the same time” and therefore concluded that “it is clear that for the principal of it, we will not participate in any such election.”
