This he says is due to an illness that has struck him days ahead the debate. Hassan Ayariga, in an interview with Joy FM, disclosed amidst coughs that he was suffering from malaria and cannot attend the IEA debate which will be held in Accra.
Though he is indisposed, Mr. Ayariga stressed that his decision to absent himself from the debate is primarily as a result of his respect for the late former Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, who was interred on Sunday at Tamale. He argued that it was inappropriate for the Presidential debate to hold on Tuesday following the death of the former Vice and therefore called on the IEA to postpone the debate.
He explained that it was improper for the IEA to go ahead with the Presidential encounter a day after the mortal remains of the late Vice President was buried. Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the IEA, Jean Mensah, says preparations are far advanced and that the debate cannot be postponed.
Mr. Ayariga’s decision to bow out of the debate has raised concerns within the party. According to Atick Mohammed, a Policy Analyst of the People’s National Convention (PNC), the decision by their flagbearer is an attempt to chicken out from the debate, adding the party will not continue to tolerate the impromptu decisions by Mr. Ayariga without their consent.
