President John Dramani Mahama has blamed
politicians for the tensions escalating within the media landscape.
He accused politicians of feeding the media with
false and fabricated stories intended to tarnish the credibility of their
political opponents.
He charged the Ghana Journalist Association and
other journalism entities to adopt effective regulatory measures in ensuring
that media practitioners operate under the code of ethics.
“The Ghana Journalist Association and the Private
Newspapers Association of Ghana have the responsibility to step up surveillance
by imposing self-regulation on Practitioners to strictly adhere to the rule of
the game.” he noted.
President John Mahama made this remark at the
second Institute of Economic Affairs Presidential debate held at the Banquet
Hall of the State House in Accra on Wednesday.
The IEA debate is an initiative to give Ghanaians
an opportunity to critique the policies and proposals of Presidential
candidates with representation in Parliament and as a result make informed
choices on December 7 this electioneering year.
Reacting to a question on media regulation,
President Mahama further implored the media to self- regulate their activities
and also urged media practitioners to desist from perpetuating falsehood put
out by any person.
President Mahama commended journalists for their
role in nation building but advised them to guard themselves against any
unjustifiable rumours.
He also disclosed that the government has disbursed
a sum of GH¢2million to equip media organizations and also motivate media
practitioners.
