Former
Minister for Information under the erstwhile Kufour government, Stephen
Asamoah Boateng wants authorities of the University of Ghana to consult
with appropriate State agencies in finding a lasting solution to the
brouhaha over the restriction of vehicular access to campus without a
sticker.
The University authorities' decision was to delimit the
entry of vehicles that do not have the school's customized stickers
displayed on them.
The decision comes on the heels of the
University's inability to charge road tolls meant to defray the cost it
incurred in the construction of motorable roads for the students. The
institution cited security reasons as its main motivation for preventing
vehicles without stickers to ply its roads.
The school, on
Saturday, blocked all access routes except the entrance from the
Okponglo intersection for vehicle drivers to utilize.
Motorists,
together with parents who have kids schooling at the University Basic
School (UBS), located on the University of Ghana campus, have all been
asked to purchase the sticker worth GHC 400 or otherwise use other
access routes to the school.
The new order seems to have
infuriated the parents who thronged the Westgate of the University of
Ghana on Monday, which links commuters to Ghana Institute of Public and
Management Administration (GIMPA) and its environs, by blocking the road
in protest.
Speaking on U TV's morning show "Adekye Nsroma", Asamoah Boateng was unhappy the situation had been allowed to escalate to such heights.
“….the
University authorities need to be considerate in their
decision-making….government and the University leaders should both come
to a consensus in order to maintain peace and resolve the impasse,”
Asamoah Boateng said. |
