Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic
Party (NPP) has admonished President John Mahama to instill discipline in his
supporters who thronged the Supreme Court on Wednesday, January 16.
Sammy Awuku called on the President to bring his
enthusiasts to order following claims that some supporters of the ruling
National Democratic Congress meted out their aggression on the supporters of
the opposition NPP.
He explained that “Ordinary Ghanaians walking along
the High Street, in front of the Supreme Court building, were attacked by an
organised group of supporters of the National Democratic Congress with weapons,
including canes, deliberately supplied to them.”
“Also attacked was Nana Kofi Damoah, a young NPP
activist, who was assaulted with sticks by a group of NDC supporters right at
the entrance of the Court. It is obvious that this was a planned and
orchestrated attack by NDC on innocent people perceived to be supporters or
sympathisers of the New Patriotic Party.”
The New Patriotic Party under the behest of its
Presidential candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, Vice Presidential
candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the party's National Chair, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey,
petitioned the Supreme Court to seek redress in their legal battle with the
governing party.
The petitioners have challenged the Presidential
results declared by the Electoral Commission which effected the inauguration of
President John Dramani Mahama to serve a second term in office.
They have filed a petition against the President and
the Electoral Commission, who are respondents to the case, in hope that the
Supreme Court will overturn the electoral results in the 2012 Presidential
elections.
Supporters of both parties clashed yesterday at the
premises of the court which resulted in a brawl but Police present dispersed
the agitated supporters in order to maintain law and order.
Sammy Awuku reacting to yesterday’s incident noted
in a statement that “These unprovoked acts of violence and intimidation are
provocative and extremely disturbing. Nothing was said or done by those
innocent Ghanaians to have fallen victim to such violence.”
He therefore urged President Mahama and the
leadership of NDC to “bring to book those among their fold who are determined
to use such NDC supporters as instruments of political violence.”
He however pledged his party’s commitment to
ensuring that the laws of the country are esteemed in order to promote peace.
Portion of the statement issued and signed by him
read: “The NPP is determined to play by the rules and so should the President
and his party. We, for our part, have been able to keep our supporters calm and
will continue to urge them to remain calm. We thank the security agencies for
saving the situation and urge them to continue to enforce their mandate of
protecting lives and property.”
