The New Patriotic Party’s legal team has indicated
that the petitioners in the case against the Electoral Commission and President
John Dramani Mahama at the Supreme Court are no longer challenging the
composition of the panel of judges sitting on the case.
The petitioners; NPP Presidential candidate, Nana
Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, Vice Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and National Chairman, Jake
Obetsebi Lamptey are challenging the electoral results in the 2012 Presidential
elections.
They accused the EC of conniving with the National
Democratic Congress to rig the election in favour of President John Mahama and
therefore petitioned the highest court of the land for a redress.
First hearing of the NPP’s Presidential Election
Petition was adjourned sine die by Justice William Atuguba following the NPP’s
objection to a joinder by the National Democratic Congress.
The petitioners also raised concerns about the
composition of the panel of judges sitting on the case and were implored to
file a formal motion to that effect.
A statement issued by the lawyers of the
plaintiffs read “we
have upon consideration decided not to pursue the matter in order to facilitate
an expeditious determination of the petition.”
The legal team of the plaintiffs held a meeting on
Friday to decide on the period to file the formal application challenging the
composition of the panel of judges sitting on the case before the Supreme
Court.
But according to the statement, the decision not to
challenge the composition of the panel of judges is to “ensure an early hearing
of the application for joinder.”
