The National Democratic Congress has moved its motion to join the petition filed by the Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Akufo Addo, Vice Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Jake Obetsebi Lamptey, National Chairman of the party, challenging the electoral results in the December 7 polls.
The petitioners claim to have pieced together evidence suggesting over 1.3 million votes were wrongly counted and therefore seeks for a redress at the Supreme Court.
The respondents; President John Dramani and the Electoral Commission, have however denied claims of rigging in the elections and are calling on the court to dismiss the writ.
According to the President, there are about 4800 witnesses to testify against the NPP's petition, meanwhile the National Democratic Congress in its joinder application also seeks to be the third respondent to the case.
Lead counsel for the NDC, Tsatsu Tsikata today prayed the Supreme Court to allow for the joinder application filed by the party.
Tsatsu Tsikata stated that if the legitimacy of the President is challenged by the petitioners, then the party on whose ticket the President was elected to serve a second term in office must be allowed to join as a respondent.
He explained the constitutional and legal bases on which the NDC has filed for a joinder, adding that it is only fair for the party to be heard in the case.
The Supreme Court presided by Justice William Atuguba has adjourned sitting on the case to January 22, after hearing arguments from lawyers for the applicants and counsel for the petitioners.
Lawyers for the petitioners have objected to the joinder application and are yet to move a formal motion in court.
