Five arrested for shooting Upper West Regional Minister

Five people have been arrested in the Upper West Region for the shooting of the Regional Minister Alhaji Amin Amidu Sulemani.

The shooting incident occurred a month ago and the Police Command in the Region has so far arrested the five in connection with the incident.

The Police acting on tip-offs swooped down on all the five people at their hideouts in the region.

According to the Police, they received several tip-offs between December 25 last year and January 3, 2013 and acted swiftly to arrest the suspects.

The suspects include one Moshie from Bawku in the Upper East Region and four Fulanis.

Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kofi Danso speaking at a news conference at the Regional capital, Wa, stated the suspects have been remanded in court pending further investigations.

He blamed the recent high rise of armed robbery in the region on the porous nature of the country’s border with Burkina Faso.

According to him, “there are uncountable unapproved routes between Ghana, that is Upper West, and Burkina Faso that make it easy for people to cross over to either side.”

He also cited some other causes as the free movements of Fulanis, nature of the roads in the region, the long distances between communities and connivance of criminals with cattle owners.

Names of the five suspects were given as Waleika Iddris, Osman Amin, Korka Sonde, Jallo Fuseini and Munya Jallo.

DCOP Kofi Danso explained that Waleika Iddris is alleged to be an informant to armed robbers, while the other four are blacklisted by Burkina Faso Police Service.
