Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party,
Nana Akufo Addo, has pledged to enhance national security to ensure peace in
the country.
He promised to equip the security institutions in
order to boost their operations to combat crimes in the nation.
Speaking at the final IEA debate on Wednesday in
Accra, he said, under his leadership, the Police service will be resourced to aid them in their fight against crime and
also the number of police personnel will be increased.
To him, “the security of everyday life is the most
fundamental requirement of any citizen in any society and the people of Ghana
have been confronted recently with significant increase in crime.”
Nana Addo added
the Ministry of Justice and the judicial service will be strengthened to
make sure the laws of the country are strictly enforced and further stated that
an NPP government will adopt drastic measures to minimize the incidence of
criminal activities.
Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress,
President John Dramani Mahama, also used the IEA platform to point out his
security strategy.
According to him, his administration will also
combat crime disclosing that “There has been a drop in reported robbery cases
from 4,753 in 2008 to 3,909 in 2012. It is only in the area of defilement and
rape that we have not seen sufficient reduction.”
"The NDC have provided technology, personnel
and equipment to fight crime. We have also provided the necessary support to
the police to enable them fight crime. There has also been an increase in
recruitment of the police to improve the human resource capacity."
He stressed that under his administration, the
Police service will be well-equipped and resourced to fight against the
peddling of illegal drugs.
He promised to fund the Narcotics Control Board in
order to turf out the trade of narcotics and also improve the partnership of
the Board with foreign agencies.
On the same issue, PNC flagbearer Hassan Ayariga
promised to modernize security agencies to enable them perform effectively.
He pledged to increase the ratio of police
personnel to civilians by 1:300 in order to empower the police force to fight
crime.
Touching on the same sector of security, CPP
Presidential candidate, Dr. Michael Abu Sakara said his government will
heighten public education on fighting crime in the nation.
He explained: “At the national security level, we
will fight crime in the community by the establishment of a people’s
information and suggestions complaints office in every district and in work
places so as to better detect crime and have a catalogue of actions that have
been taken and actions that have not been taken.”
“The key thing is to be an enforcing and
implementing government. This will serve as a deterrent to everyone and
strengthen discipline in all. We will also strengthen the economic crimes unit
by retooling them and ensuring that we select the right people to put in those
places and finally to have institutional reforms and address the issues of what
is right and what is wrong.”
