Deputy
Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party, Samuel Awuku has
admonished the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) not to "witch-hunt"
Pharmaceutical companies in the country.
According to him, the
FDA seems to take delight in clamping down on locally-based
pharmaceutical companies and in making such attempts, tend to debase
their corporate image as well.
He described as unfortunate the
ordeal of Tobinco Pharmaceuticals Limited and Bliss GVS Pharma, at the
hands of the FDA, and wondered how effective the monitoring role of the
FDA is.
“The FDA should not become a witch-hunting machine
instead of their duty as regulators. Did they know all this while about
their wrongdoing and they sat down...? I suspect there’s more to it than
meets the eye…It’s like a military regime at the FDA,” he said.
He
feared the actions by the FDA may not augur well to the international
community because to him, the FDA's actions does not "make sense. It’s
never made sense and it won’t make sense.”
The Food and Drugs
Authority, a couple of weeks ago, seized over 100 medicines imported and
distributed by Tobinco Pharmaceuticals Ltd claiming the drugs were
fake.
