Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Searchlight,
Ken Kuranchie has lashed out at Justice William Atuguba, claiming he
never respected the attendees to the court proceedings during the
Presidential election petition hearing.
The hearing that lasted
for 8 months saw him together with the Deputy Communications Director of
the opposition New Patriotic Party, Sammy Awuku and Stephen Atuguba, an
NDC activist, been arraigned in court and cited for contempt.
Ken Kuranchie was charged and sentenced to 10 days imprisonment.
Reacting
to the demeanor of Justice Atuguba, Ken Kuranchie strongly held that
the Supreme Court Judge, during the election hearing, absolutely ignored
the pedigree of the personalities who were charged for making
contemptible remarks about the court and the case, particularly NPP
General Secretary, Lawyer Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie.
According to him, Justice Atuguba sought to run them down in "insults" without any restraints.
And so, speaking on Oman FM
in relation to the comments by former President Jerry John Rawlings
that he (Justice Atuguba) must be praised for restoring order and
ensuring that the petition did not end in chaos, Ken Kuranchie believed
it is a frightening for the Chairman of the nine-member panel to receive
any praise regarding his posture on the election petition.
To
him, Justice Atuguba never portrayed "judicial equanimity…judicial
self-control" and so, "it is sad for anybody to come and tell me that
they should go and paint Ghana in the image of Mr. Justice Atuguba. It’s
a frightening concept.” |
