Taxi
drivers in the capital, Accra, have issued a three-day ultimatum to the
Mayor of Accra, Alfred Oko Vanderpuye to intervene in their plight or
else face their wrath.
Angry swarm of taxi drivers today
demonstrated in protest against the new by-laws formulated by the Accra
Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Tema Metropolitan Assembly, (TMA), Ga West,
Ga East and other Assemblies.
The taxi drivers once again
stormed the premises of PEACE FM to register their displeasure and also
implore the Mayor of Accra to review the new by-laws. They grumbled that
the AMA together with the other Assemblies is demanding that they join
Driver's Unions at the various taxi stations for easy identification. In
view of this, the taxi drivers, who are known to be "floating drivers",
will have to acquire a driver's license to operate outside their
territories; otherwise they have to quit "floating."
One of the
protesters, speaking to Peace FM, issued a stern caution to the AMA,
saying "we want to tell them that there’s no provision in the 1992
Constitution which says you should join a Union before you operate. If
we, the drivers, unite and arraign them before court, we will win our
case because there’s nowhere in the constitution which says when DVLA
has given us license, you should also give us license.”
“Our
final conclusion is that AMA has no authority to force us to join a
Union before we can operate. We won’t join any Union. So, we give them
three days, from now to Wednesday or else we will face them squarely.”
However,
about ten (10) of the drivers were arrested by Police personnel
dispatched to calm the situation whilst others had their vehicles towed
to the Police station. |
