A
leading member of the New Patriotic Party, Kwabena Sarpong has
cynically admonished Ghanaians to pay the new tariffs announced by the
Public Utility and Regulatory Commission (PURC), whether they like it or
not.
According to him, Ghanaians should not entirely blame the
PURC for the tariff increment because they have fallen out of any better
options.
He recounted that the high tariff adjustments are as a
result of the adamant stance taken by the Ghanaian electorate against
the NPP government whose administration, he stated, would have helped
ease the situation.
To him, the PURC's inability to increase the
tariffs in previous years has amounted to the recent changes and so, in
his earnest view, the populace should not grumble but adjust themselves
to the new increment in the electricity and water tariffs.
Speaking
on Oman FM, Mr. Kwabena Sarpong noted that the opposition NPP
forewarned Ghanaians not to vote for the ruling National Democratic
Congress.
“What is happening; it should happen because that is
what we opted for. What did the NPP not say in this country before the
elections?...The price increase is a lesson for Ghanaians. It’s a lesson
for us. Next time when you are given political power, you will know how
well to use it.
“It was political expediency that led to why
they were not allowed to increase it and therefore we have to pay the
price. Next time when you get the political power, 2016, you will use it
wisely…Why won’t you pay? You voted for the man (Mahama) to rule you,”
he said.
He insisted that the tariffs should be increased by 200%
instead of the 78.9% and 52% tariffs on electricity and water
respectively.
