A
Labour expert, Austin Gamey says striking workers on the labour front
must have their salaries suspended if they contravene the Labour Act.
Making
his point on the "Gold Power Dirve" on Radio Gold, Mr. Austin Gamey
asked employers in the country, particularly Government, to enforce the
provisions in the Labour Act that compel them to sanction public sector
workers who embark on illegal strike actions.
“Employer will have
to enforce that. You, the employer, will have to put together your
legitimate point and then raise it before the National Labour Commission
and once it is upheld, then it means it is legal. You can then proceed
to deduct it from their pay.”
He bemoaned the undisciplined
attitude of members on the Labour front and so, supported the call by
the National Security Advisor, Brigadier General Joseph Nunoo Mensah
(retired) that there should be “suspension of salaries of striking
employees.
He further called on critics not to vent their spleen
on Brigadier General Joseph Nunoo Mensah (retired) because "the level of
indiscipline is extremely unacceptable."
He feared the numerous strike actions by various Labour Unions in the country may have an adverse effect on the economy.
"Ghana
is among the few nations in the world that seem to be playing that
drum. And I don’t know which employer locally or internationally who be
willing to come and invest in an economy where, every five minutes,
people are on strike whether they are intellectuals or ordinary
people…It’s so amazing and I don’t know why people are blaming General
Nunoo Mensah for it (his comments),” Austin Gamey asserted.
