Members
and Supporters of the People's Progressive Party on Thursday hit the
principal streets of the capital, Accra, in protest against the alarming
spate of corruption in the country.
The protesters wielded
placards with inscriptions; "Say No to corruption," Chop, chop go kill
Ghana", Abuse of poverty too much", "Put our interest first" among
others as they registered their displeasure with the governance system
of President Mahama and his government.
A statement released by
the party indicated that a report by a civil society organization,
Transparency International, revealed over 3 billion cedis is
misappropriated each year, in the public sector.
The
demonstrators therefore demanded a review of the 1992 constitution in
their quest to combat the canker in the President Mahama's
administration.
The demonstrators had earlier in the day,
converged at the Obra Spot near the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra, where
they were addressed by party leaders before the march started.
Delivering
a speech during the demonstration, Spokesperson for the Progressive
People's Party, William Dowokpor cited corruption as a major challenge
to Ghanaians, hence having an adverse effect on the progress of the
economy.
"Over half a century ago, the founders of this country
engaged in actions of this nature to attain political independence for
us. But the economic independence that must go with it has eluded us.
Today, we rise up against corruption as the main reason why we have not
been able to attain sustainable economic growth for transformational
development and economic freedom of this country."
He urged the entire population and civil society groups to unite in fighting against the rot in the Ghanaian system.
"It
is our fervent hope that this campaign will be the last uprising in
this country. After which the arrangements in the 1992 constitution that
do not help for the operation of good and accountable governance will
be removed and the final blow dealt to corruption. Let us stay together
to take action against corruption all the time." |
