Ashanti Regional Youth Organiser of the NDC, Brogya Genfi, has described the recently announced petroleum price increment as an "unwise" political decision taken by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).
Speaking on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo", Brogya Genfi told host Kwami Sefa Kayi announcement of the new adjustments in petroleum products will affect the image of government as well as growth of the economy.
He stated emphatically that the petrol price increment is no "good news" to Ghanaians because Ghanaians are already battling with unending power crises.
“Those who use fuel and by God’s grace has been able to buy gen set, when we increase fuel prices; it means his cost of powering the generator has also hiked up. So, I’m not sure that everybody will hear such news as this and clap for the government…As we’re talking now and even as we’re experiencing ‘dumsor’, it is not a situation that is even good for the government. It even affects the government because if productivity is slowing, it affects government taxes. It affects the growth of the economy.”
Though he acknowledged that fact that the National Petroleum Authority had to increase the prices in order to ward off any future risks to the petroleum sector of the economy, the NDC Ashanti Regional Youth Organiser however appealed to the government to "take steps in introducing mitigation strategies that will ensure the impact is not so high."
“…looking at the economic sense of it and the political sense of it, it is politically unwise but in terms of the economy; it is a wise decision to be taken at this time," he added.
Prices of petroleum products are up by 9% effective Sunday, 17th May, 2015. |
