General Secretary of the People's National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah has called on the Government of Ghana to dissolve the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) over the introduction of new prices on petroleum products.
Prices of petroleum products are up by 9% effective Sunday, 17th May, 2015.
According to the new price index, petrol will now be sold at GHC 3.33 per litre while Diesel goes for GHC 2.34 per litre.
Speaking on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo", Bernard Mornah wondered why the Mahama administration cannot "deactivate the National Petroleum Authority because we cannot leave an institution created by government to become a monster".
He opined that the NPA should be seen as autonomous since it was the Government of Ghana that assented to its creation through Parliamentary procedures.
To him, “if that institution is an albatross on the neck of the government, imposing hardship; all the government could do was to go to Parliament and deactivate the National Petroleum Authority because we cannot leave an institution created by government to become a monster.”
He alluded to some protests by pressure group, Committee for Joint Action (CJA) for which he is a member, against the Kufour government over same issues with the petroleum sector.
“These issues that we raised since 2005, 2006, 2007 to 2008 where NPP were out of office, today we’re repeating the same. Today, we’re repeating the same" therefore "if the NPA has become a monster, let the Government of Ghana scrap it," Bernard Mornah stressed. |
