President John Dramani Mahama says his administration
will "seriously" pursue and implement an "aggressive"
housing scheme for the security personnel.
Consequently, he said, Parliament was currently
considering some proposals by both foreign and local companies to construct
housing units for the security personnel.
President Mahama gave the assurance Thursday at a
meeting with the Armed Forces Council at the Ministry of Defence in Accra.
By virtue of his former position as the
Vice-President, Mr Mahama had been the Chairman of the Armed Forces Council for
the past four years.
Thursday’s meeting was his last meeting with the
members of the Council.
Vice-President Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur is due to
take over as the Chairman of the Armed Forces Council.
The meeting was to deliberate on a few issues of importance
to the enhancement of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
President Mahama used the occasion to swear in a
new member of the Council, Rear Admiral (Retd.) Jonathan Adoko.
He noted that accommodation was one of the
challenges facing the security services, and indicated that the government
would provide decent accommodation for them.
"It is the determination of my government
during its first tenure to seriously pursue and implement an aggressive housing
scheme for the security personnel," he said.
The President said the government as part of its
Better Ghana Agenda for the GAF during the administration of President John
Evans Atta Mills, provided many military equipment, aircraft, naval vessels and
other platforms to enable the armed forces to perform their constitutional
mandate of providing security for the citizens.
