Police restore calm in Makola Market

The Ghana Police Service has restored order and calm at the Makola Market where some riots broke out between supporters of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the main opposition New Patriotic Party.

According to Ghananewslink sources, the supporters attacked each other wielding machetes.

The traders, hawkers and sellers in the market fled for fear of their lives.

The country has since Monday undergone some acts of violence following the opposition party’s refusal to concede defeat.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused both the Electoral Commission and the ruling party of rigging the elections and are therefore set to pursue their case in court.

NPP supporters have a couple of days ago besieged Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in protest against the electoral results and in support of their party’s court action.

Though our checks indicate that the riots at the Makola Market may have been fuelled by vengeance, the cause of the clash is still unclear.
