Ghana’s first President’s son, Dr. Sekou Nkrumah
says the defeat of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is a mark
which signifies the end of the party’s flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo’s
Presidential career.
He explained that this defeat will not give him a
third mandate to lead the NPP in 2016 stating that his age by next four years
would not permit him to stand for the flagbearership.
“I think the
Presidential ambition of Nana Addo has just gone out of the window by this
defeat. In life I think it is not everything that you can achieve and life has
a way of humbling people” he said.
Speaking to Radio XYZ, Sekou Nkrumah stressed that “NPP
will definitely have to change their leadership; I can’t see Nana Akufo-Addo
leading the NPP in 2016”.
Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, NPP Presidential
candidate, lost out in the Presidential race by 47.74% to his competitor
President-elect John Dramani Mahama, leader of the National Democratic Congress
(NDC).
President-elect John Mahama polled 5,574,761
votes representing 50.70%.
Dr. Sekou Nkrumah believes President-elect John
Dramani Mahama won the elections due to his ethnic background.
To him, “If John Mahama was not a Northener, NDC
would have lost the 2012 elections.”
He further stated Nana Addo’s defeat gives way for
former Trades Minister and 2008 Presidential contender of the New Patriotic Party,
John Alan Kojo Kyeremanteng to take over the flagbearership in 2016.
He explained that Alan Kyeremanteng who pitched
height with Nana Addo for the flagbearer spot in the party’s 2008 Congress,
would be a more favourable candidate to lead the NPP in next four years.
“Alan Kyeremanteng looks like he is now very well
positioned to take over the leadership of the NPP…I think talking about
personality and all that, he seems to be favourable to many people in terms of
the way he carries himself”.
Nana Akufo Addo will be 72 years-old by 2016.
