The New Patriotic Party fanatics today have poured onto the streets in Ashanti Region in their numbers to protest the electoral results and also declare their Presidential candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, victor in the just ended December polls.
The Protestors marched through the principal
streets of Kumasi amidst chants to
express their displeasure with the Electoral Commission (EC).
They accused the EC of discriminating against the
region and wrongfully announcing President John Dramani Mahama, winner in the
2012 elections.
They claim electorates in the region were strictly
subjected to the verification system during the polls but voters in other
regions of the country were allowed to vote despite the verification procedure.
The demonstration is dubbed "March for Justice".
Some protestors in Tuesday’s demonstration asserted
that Nana Addo had been robbed of his victory and therefore registered their
disgust at the actions of the EC Chairman, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan.
A protestor in an interview exclaimed that
"What even annoyed our supporters is that we had protested to Afari Gyan
that we had detected some malfeasance in the figures.
"He had 72 hours within which to declare but
within 12 hours he had come out with the declaration.”
According to another disappointed demonstrator,
"This demonstration means a lot to us. We expect the Peace Council, the
Electoral Commission to do the right thing and the right thing is to declare
Nana Addo winner of this election.”
A protestor, Asare Donkor, speaking to a
Kumasi-based media, indicated that the leaders of the demonstration abandoned
their initial plan to petition the EC Ashanti Regional Chairman due to the
supporters’ willingness to follow them which was not in accordance with the
agreement the leaders had with the Police.
He explained the earlier decision by the leaders
was to go alone to present the petition.
The demonstrators have converged at the Abbey Park
awaiting an address from the party’s National Executives.
NPP National Chairman, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey, made
an appearance at the Park and would address the mammoth crowd.
The demonstration is said to be one of the biggest
after the party’s Kumi preko demonstration in the Ashanti Region in 1993.
Trace of the party’s flagbearer at the occasion has
not yet been identified.
