John Mahama promised Ghanaians free education in 2008 – NPP

With just two days to the December 7 polls, the opposition New Patriotic Party has released an audio tape containing a voice purported to be President John Mahama’s, on which he is quoted to have promised Ghanaians free secondary education.

Prior to the 2008 elections, President Mahama, then running mate to the late President John Atta Mills, is said to have promised Ghanaians of school-going age that education would be made free under the NDC administration.

He is quoted to have said the NDC would make secondary education free for students of community day schools while those in the boarding schools would have their fees subvented by government.

The National Democratic Congress has since the NPP Presidential candidate promised to initiate free S.H.S education in Ghana, heavily criticized the opposition party and raised red flags over the implementation of the policy.

The NDC questions the feasibility of the free education policy now because according to the party, the policy would compromise the quality of education in the country. To them, there should first be an establishment of several educational facilities and infrastructure to enhance the quality of education.

But former General Secretary of the NPP, who sneaked the audio tape, believes it has blown off NDC’s cover, therefore revealing their desperation to hold on to power.

The NPP says the recent revelations about President Mahama’s stance on the free S.H.S policy expose the hypocrisy of the National Democratic Congress.
