50000 teachers booked to receive free laptops – Government discloses

Over 50, 000 teachers in the country are to receive about 400000 laptops to ease teaching and learning in their various schools.

The distribution is part of government’s initiative to train the teachers in Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

The special ICT project which was launched today by government will begin in 62 training centers across the country and will teach the teachers the basics of using the computer for teaching.

Speaking at the launch, President Mahama disclosed a 75 million dollar facility has been secured to enhance teaching and also provide incentives to the teachers.

President Mahama explained: “We have been distributing laptops to schools and students and we believe that the teacher who is at the centre of teaching and learning must also be a beneficiary of this program. And that is why we crafted this program and decided that we will start basic ICT training for teachers so that you can become conversant with the computer technology to.”

The teachers will be taken through intensive training and supplied with all necessary learning materials including the laptops. They will also receive certificates of the participation at the end of the programme.

President Mahama believed this initiative would facilitate the activities of the teachers.

He noted that “it is necessary to train yourself in computer and ICT both to make your work easier and also to be able to help your students in terms of the use of computer and ICT. This programme will eventually give you more knowledge than you can ever imagine. The computer gives you access to all the knowledge in the world at the click of a button.”

He continued that “This training is the first face and depending on how successful it goes we will craft another face so that we cover more teachers until we cover all teachers nationwide. This will be very beneficial to both teachers and students.”

Several students in basic schools, high schools and tertiary institutions are also to benefit from the laptop distribution.
