Former Nigerian President calls for peace in Ghana’s December polls
Former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo has charged Ghanaians to continue to lift high the pride of Africa by ensuring peace in Friday’s elections.
He entreated Ghanaians to replicate the peaceful polls that have since characterized the nation, in this year’s elections.
Mr Obasanjo, who led an ECOWAS election observer to Ghana, said Ghana could pull off a clean sheet as a beacon of peace, thereby recording non-violent elections and remaining a bright spot to neighbouring countries.
The ECOWAS delegation made their first arrival at the residence of former President John Agyekum Kufour and later met with former President Jerry John Rawlings.
At the meeting with former President Rawlings, Mr. Obasanjo commended Ghana for her democratic maturity explaining that the nation has chalked several successes by organizing five peaceful elections in single file.
Former President Rawlings delivering his speech advised the candidates contesting the elections to be true to their commitment to fighting corruption in the country.
He charged the victor in the December polls to nip corruption in the bud.
He however expressed anxieties over claims that some Members of Parliament were clandestinely plotting to resort to violence in order to retain their seats in Parliament.
He also bemoaned what he claimed were attempts by a brother of Alfred Agbesi Woyome and some NDC MPs to use violence to cling to their seats.
