President-elect John Dramani Mahama has urged
Ghanaians to develop the spirit of cooperation in order not to engage in any
practices that hinder the progress of the nation.
Addressing a mammoth crowd of supporters at a
National Democratic Congress victory party at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle
yesterday, President John Mahama ascribed his victory to the “good works” of
the late President John Evans Atta Mills.
During the President’s acceptance speech, he
outlined some challenges that under his administration, would be eliminated to
up the development of the country.
“There is much work to be done, the issues and
challenges that are facing our nation have no allegiances. They cut across
lines of political affiliation, religious and ethnic backgrounds, social class
and regional location, indeed they affect all of us.”
“we cannot afford to be enemies of our own
progress, we cannot afford to stand divided, it is too great a burden for this
nation; we have come too far on this journey to weigh ourselves down with
pettiness, intolerance and negativity.”
The President also expressed his gratitude to all
Ghanaians for entrusting their confidence in him and giving him a second term
in the seat of government.
“I wish to thank the millions of voters who placed
their trust in me; I am grateful to have earned your trust, I can assure you
that your trust is not misplaced, and that I will work hard for and on behalf
of every Ghanaian,” he said.
He further urged Ghanaians to put their party
differences aside but asked them to rally their support behind him.
He explained that “Ghana is the winner” and
therefore Ghanaians should rise up to the occasion and ensure that the nation
sails through her challenges successfully.
He praised Ghanaians for showing a sense of
political maturity and staging six successive and peaceful elections.
He also commended the other candidates for the love
they have exhibited for their "beloved mother Ghana” and therefore
implored their assistance to help build the nation together.
“So I wish to welcome my fellow candidates to join
me now as partners in the project of nation building and of creating a better
Ghana.”
President-elect John Mahama also pledged his commitment
to strengthening Ghana’s democracy and building a future for the nation.
He was grateful to God for his victory.
