Melcom tragedy is a national disaster – Veep declares

Vice President, Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, has declared the collapse of the Melcom ultra-modern shopping edifice as a national disaster.

He said this during his visit to the accident scene at Achimota in Accra. Currently, 22 victims have been rescued with 3 persons perished in the rubble of the shopping complex.

Several people are reported to be trapped in the collapsed building.

A strong team of security personnel and rescue forces have besieged the venue to save lives and retrieve properties.

Mr. Amissah-Arthur further said the outpour of onlookers at the site threatens the work of the rescuers and therefore appealed to the mass people to distance themselves to facilitate the work of the team.

Meanwhile, a delegation from government including the Accra Mayor, Dr. Alfred Vanderpuye , have been at the venue to witness the incident. President John Mahama has however enjoined the Interior Minister, William Kwesi Aboah and the Vice President to coordinate all rescue operations.

The Vice Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, together with the party’s Chairman, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, are also at the scene to get first-hand information.
